Meanwhile, I have a question regarding the opportunities for interview. I understand that Harvard has received a record high number of applications this year, and the chances for an interview have, in general, dwindled. Nevertheless, I live in a large state with an apparently active alumni network (CA), it is March, and I have only received one promise for an interview since Jan. I am waiting anxiously for a chance to get to know more about Harvard, and vice versa, and can't help but worrying if there is some technical issue or if I should consider this a subtle indication of rejection. I would love to receive some advice on my situation, and also to know if it is too late for an interview and I should stop waiting.
Thanks again for being very generous with your time. Your advices help me a lot.
-AMAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-997151468195426255.post-68269664811740886432011-03-02T21:30:12.228-08:002011-03-02T21:30:12.228-08:00(In reference to a previous post) With limited i...(In reference to a previous post) With limited interviews happening this year, does an interview (or lack thereof) correspond to making (or not making) the 2nd round? Or are interviews still not really indicative of an applicant's chances of admission? On a different note, I'd like to thank you for this blog - it's been really informative and helpful!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-997151468195426255.post-88425161272189541522011-02-25T14:49:37.486-08:002011-02-25T14:49:37.486-08:00"Be smart about it" is wonderful social ..."Be smart about it" is wonderful social media advice for all applicants. I would add (suggest) that timing is important. Be smart about it BEFORE you apply. When the time comes that you apply for college admission, or for a job, scholarship, grant or anything... it is too late. Be smart BEFORE you apply so that the wrong person will not see your dictator/belly dancing affections.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-997151468195426255.post-66099510832769866272011-01-11T09:41:52.514-08:002011-01-11T09:41:52.514-08:00Hi, thanks for the post and link. I really appreciated what Ms.Chua wrote. My college boy basically hates me. My highschool senior boy, although often argues with me, has a better attitude and understanding why his parents sometimes push him, with those 'negative' motivations. As to your point:
"I worry that Chua's system of child-rearing would fail at this. It could produce children who have grown so used to being measured and graded and fulfilling explicit expectatations that they don't know how to operate without metrics... or without a parent hovering and directing them. That's a risk."

I think this statement in the WSJ link counters your point enough. The Professional success:
"When it comes to parenting, the Chinese seem to produce children who display academic excellence, musical mastery and professional success "

I see plenty of chinese folks around me who are successful in their profession. There is no perfect parenting or educational system. But if anything has to be emphasized in education, it should be the 'professional success'. There are of course other great traditions, such as Jewish tradition. If you see how Professor Richard Feynman was affected by his father's ways with critical thinking, you see another great way -- the Jewish way.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-997151468195426255.post-8927576243937319182011-01-09T20:16:07.598-08:002011-01-09T20:16:07.598-08:00Hi there, thanks for the words of support! I'm glad you find this helpful - feel free to share the link or the content.

As for your son's case, I wouldn't give up hope just yet because you are correct in assuming different regions tend to do interviews at different times. I know for my region we were interviewing through March of last year, even though they had finished earlier in other geographies. That said, even if Harvard is a pass, hearing back from both Yale and Princeton is great and something to be excited about. Focus on that. Best of luck to you!Allison Otishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16474910329863699270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-997151468195426255.post-89305318715015921982011-01-07T20:03:28.952-08:002011-01-07T20:03:28.952-08:00Hi, I've been looking for your posts in colleg...Hi, I've been looking for your posts in college confidential, but couldn't find any. I do not understand why they are deleting your posts as they are perfectly good and helpful ones for the applicants.

Re."Fewer interviews will be given this year," I wonder if this also means they may not give interviews to some applicants, especially to those who do not cut their first screening? [This is because unless Harvard somehow increased the # of interviewers vastly, the can only give 'fewer' interviews by not giving some portion of their applicants because the number of applicants should only increase this year from last.]

I am slightly concerned about this because my S2 sent app on the same day (Dec.20) to H, Yale and Columbia, and about a week later to Princeton. He was contacted by Yale and Princeton already. But Harvard has yet to contact him -- the admission office do not even verify if they received or not the research and other supplements my S2 mailed. So it makes me think they are either terribly swamped by the volume, this region may be short in interviewers, or my S2's stat did not cut their first screening?

Thanks for the very helpful posts here and on CC.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-997151468195426255.post-15563880642735288042011-01-07T08:25:55.365-08:002011-01-07T08:25:55.365-08:00Most time people, like you tends to use some speci...Most time people, like you tends to use some specific case to generalize the overall experience. It is sad but common practice.

I don't know what's the percentage of student who has been in H but does not like it at all. But I can say that big majority students and other public media ranked H as the top 1 or 2 school with a very solid good reason. It is like to buy a product. The chance that you will be satisfied is very high. Four years is short. Before you find out whether a school is the one you like, every one in your age group is moving forward already. You are going to be left behind and keep wondering which school is fit to you, which job is fit to you, and which life style is fit to you, by the time you figure it out, you have no chance to do it anymore, you are old and waiting for the retirement benefit. bzinbar@yahoo.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-997151468195426255.post-39229659243265971602010-03-09T15:50:03.009-08:002010-03-09T15:50:03.009-08:00That is absolutely fine.
